Clerk Refuses to Issue Marriage Licenses to Gay Couple

The New York Times reported today on a county clerk from Kentucky refusing to issue same-sex marriage licenses due to her religious beliefs. Two gay couples, along with protesters and media coverage, went to the courthouse to get licenses and were turned away. Ms. Davis, the clerk, has not given out a marriage license since June, when the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage is legal. She and other clerks claim that being forced to issue marriage licenses violated their First Amendment rights. The Supreme Court, however, denied her appeal.
